Parry Sound Youth Justice Committee (PSYJC)

Who are we?

The Parry Sound Youth Justice Committee is comprised of volunteers who are committed to making their community a better place for all. The volunteers give their time to deliver the program and facilitate “youth justice conferences” employing a restorative justice model.

Hands TheFamilyHelpNetwork.ca is the supporting agency for the Parry Sound Youth Justice Committee.  The agency employs a Youth Justice Committee Coordinator who supports the work of the Youth Justice Steering Committee. The Steering Committee is comprised of representatives from the Crown Attorney’s Office, Ontario Provincial Police, Anishinabek Police Service, and Youth Probation.

What the does PSYJC do and why?
The Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA) was proclaimed on April 1, 2002 and put into effect April 1, 2003. Youth Justice Committees are covered under the Act.

Youth Justice Committees are composed of trained community members who meet with young people accused of minor offences, the people whom they harmed, and their parents to negotiate an appropriate way for the young person to make amends for his/her actions. Youth Justice Committees provide an opportunity for victims and communities to deal with minor, non-violent offences committed by young persons between the ages of 12 – 17 years old who are willing to take responsibility for their actions.  The program offers an alternative to the traditional court system employing a restorative justice model.

How Do We Do It?
The PSYJC is funded by the Ministry of the Attorney General, Youth Justice Committee Program with funding and support to the Committee and staff.
